Today we will talk about a very important topic, which is the relationship between GERD and nasal and sinus allergy.
If you are suffering from it, follow us after the break.
First, we talk about the two diseases, esophageal reflux and sinus allergy, and then we link them.
Firstly, a patient with allergic rhinitis always complains of chronic obstruction in the nose and chronic headache in the sinuses area above the eyes, under the eyes and in the cheeks area, as a result of sinus infections.
The patient also suffers from persistent sneezing and runny nose and from sensitivity to any smells, whether they are smoke, perfumes, gasoline or others.
When he smells it, a stuffy nose develops and a headache increases.
As for the reflux patient, he suffers from weakness in the lower esophagus muscle, and sometimes accompanied by a hernia in the diaphragm, which increases stomach acid reflux into the esophagus and causes inflammation of the esophagus.
What is relationship between esophageal reflux and sinusitis?
Until recently, it was not known that there was a relationship between them, but two years ago research was published that proved the existence of a relationship between GERD and sinusitis in patients with severe reflux and patients with reflux during sleep.
I would like to clarify that not every nasal sinus allergy patient is a patient with GERD, but patients who suffer from reflux and nasal allergy may have a relationship between them
Patient, severe reflux or night reflux during sleep,
suffers from reflux of stomach acid to the esophagus, throat and nose.
And it causes inflammation in the sinuses and mucous membrane lining the nose,
Which protects the person from exposure to external stimuli such as smoke
These frequent inflammations of the mucous membrane cause it to erode
Consequently, the immune system becomes vulnerable to external stimuli and begins to form antibodies, and allergy to these stimuli is formed.
What is the treatment for this patient?
The problem is that the patient goes to the ear and nose doctor, who may not have knowledge of the relationship of allergic rhinitis with GERD, and it is possible that the patient does not mention to the doctor that he suffers from GERD.
He deals with him as a normal allergic patient, and he prescribes cortisone sprays, which are the most popular drugs used in these cases.
But the surprise is that the patient’s response is unexpected because he did not treat the main cause.
which is the gastroesophageal reflux, so I advise in these cases that GERD be treated properly.
So that their response to the treatment of allergic rhinitis improves and the patient feels better
There are two important points. First of all, prevention. If you are sick with GERD, I advise you not to disregard it and treat it.
So that the chronic inflammation of the sinuses due to reflux does not turn into an allergy
And we know very well that the treatment of allergies is prolonged, so I recommend good treatment of reflux to prevent allergic rhinitis
Second, what is the treatment if chronic sinusitis becomes allergic?
I recommend treating reflux with the nasal allergy treatment
Whether it is sprays or tablets to get good results
I will now talk about some advice for patients with reflux, so that the reflux does not cause allergic sinusitis, especially for patients with nocturnal reflux.
And it is not to eat food immediately before bedtime and at least four hours before bedtime, and I recommend eating light meals at night
Like fruit, salads and skimmed yogurt, another tip is to raise the head of the bed.
By putting something conical under the mattress as shown in the picture, or by raising the legs of the bed
This is to prevent the return of acid from the stomach to the esophagus.
I also recommend reducing weight, abstaining from smoking, and banning chili and fatty food.
Care must be taken to eat light, grilled and boiled foods, as well as reduce sugars
Because sugars increase stomach acid and thus increase the reflux.
Also, I recommend changing the date of the reflux medication to a later period of the day if the patient suffers from nocturnal reflux.
This is to prevent the occurrence of night reflux during sleep.
But if the patient suffers from reflux during the day and at night, I advise him to divide the dose of the medicine, part of it before breakfast and the other part before dinner
Thus, the reflux is controlled throughout the day
so, we relieved the patient from recurrent sinus and throat inflammation and from allergic rhinitis
Many patients are not aware of the relationship between allergies and GERD
Changing the dose of the drug from the morning period to the evening period and following the early light dinner diet and raising the head of the bed.
It works to improve nasal allergy, improve breathing, prevent nasal congestion, and reduce snoring during sleep
