You Need To Know About This
Turmeric is the bright yellow spice most commonly
used as the main ingredient in Indian curry
dishes. According to food writer Tori Avey,
turmeric has been used as medicine for more
than 4 millennia. Avey says that Ayurveda
medicine has been praising the powerful anti-inflammatory
properties of turmeric, as well as its ability
to reduce inflammation, treat congestion,
wounds, bruises and skin conditions such as
smallpox and shingles.
And, although it goes great with eggs, soups
and smoothies, turmeric can also be mixed
with other ingredients to create topical ointments
which can heal numerous conditions.
1 Heals cuts and wounds
Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric,
has powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial
and anti-viral properties. The spice can prevent
bacterial infections in open wounds, relieve
inflammation and pain and help form new skin
cells to close wounds. Apply turmeric powder
directly on your wound or mix it with ginger
paste or linseed oil to reduce the pain.
2 Facial cleanser and acne treatment
Mix ¼ of a teaspoon of turmeric, ¼ of a
teaspoon of neem oil and 1-3 drops of lavender
essential oil to create a face mask which
can easily prevent acne breakouts. This is
due to the anti-fungal properties of turmeric
and neem oil. Leave the paste on for half
an hour to heal acne scars and prevent skin
3 Reduces inflammation
According to a WebMD article, curcumin has
powerful properties which can reduce inflammation
and swelling. Due to this ability, it can
be used against inflammatory diseases such
as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease,
eye inflammation and gingivitis. Livestrong
recommends drinking homemade turmeric tea
to reduce inflammation – just boil 4 cups
of water with a teaspoon of ground turmeric
and simmer the tea for 10 minutes before straining
it into a cup. Drink it while it’s warm.
4 Fights cancer
According to Cancer Research UK, curcumin
has anti-cancer properties which can kill
and prevent the growth of breast, bowel, stomach
and skin cancer cells. Topical application
of homemade turmeric ointment can treat skin,
mouth and vulvar cancer, and you can prepare
it by mixing some ground turmeric with Vaseline.
Rub the skin cancer with the paste 3 times
5 Eases psoriasis pain
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease which causes
red and itchy scabs on the skin. There are
no known cures for the condition, but according
to the Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological
Sciences and Applications, applying a curcumin-based
gel and avoiding allergens and dairy products
for 16 weeks, along with the use of topical
steroids and antibiotics can clear all symptoms
of psoriasis. To make a turmeric paste, mix
one part of turmeric with two parts of water
in a saucepan.
6 Treats eczema
Jen of the Eczema Holistic Healing blog, used
a simple homemade remedy made from a pinch
of turmeric and a tablespoon of virgin coconut
oil to treat the eczema around her mouth.
The paste provided great results in just 1
day, and in 4 days, she was completely relieved
of her flaky, cracked and irritated skin.
7 Improves your oral health and hygiene
Did you know that turmeric can improve your
oral health? According to a study published
in the Journal for Contemporary Dental Practice,
turmeric is just as effective as any store-bought
mouthwash in preventing plaque and gingivitis,
while the anti-cancer properties of curcumin
can also prevent oral cancer. To make your
own turmeric mouthwash, simply stir some ground
turmeric into warm water or dissolve 10 mg.
of turmeric extract in 100 ml. of warm water
and add peppermint for flavor. Turmeric for
Health recommends a turmeric toothpaste made
of 1 teaspoon of turmeric, half a teaspoon
of salt and half a teaspoon of mustard oil.
8 Decreases the aging signs
The Multicultural Beauty blog claims that
turmeric is great for polishing your skin.
A homemade recipe made of 1 tablespoon of
chickpea or gram flour, ¼ of a teaspoon of
turmeric and 2 teaspoons of milk will remove
dead skin cells and slow down the formation
of wrinkles, while also providing a beautiful
glow to your face. Rub the mixture on your
face and leave it on for 10 minutes, then
wipe the mask off with your fingertips and
rinse your face with lukewarm water. In order
to reduce wrinkles and age spots, use a mask
